Allergy or allergic diseases includes a number of medical conditions varying from simple itching to life threatening anaphylaxis. It is usually caused by hyper-reactivity of the immune system towards any typical harmless substances in the environment. Higher incidences of allergies are showed after industrialization. Chronic stress can aggrevate the allergic conditions.

The allergy can be manifested as certain disease condition such as Hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma and anaphylaxis.


Allergy is a common disease and common allergens include pollen and certain food articles. Metals and other substances may also cause allergic problems. Food, insect stain and some medications such as pencillin, aspirin etc are other common cause for allergy. Allergic reaction is developed due to both genetic and environmental factors. Due to variant causative factors allergens can be categorized into host factors consisting hereditary, race, age and sex, and environmental factors comprising exposure to infectious disease in early childhood, environmental pollution, dietary changes and allergen levels.

Most commonly seen food allergens are cow’s milk, soy, egg, wheat, fish and shellfish.


Allergic diseases are caused by inappropriate immunological responses to harmless antigens. The underlying mechanism involves immunoglobulin E antibodies, which is a part of body immune system; bind to an allergen and further to a receptor on mast cell or basophil where it can trigger the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine. The histamine produces various allegic reaction in different system which manifest as follows:

Nose: Allergic rhinitis, sneezing, running nose

Sinuses: Sinusistis

Eyes: Redness or itching of conjunctivitis, watery eyes

Airways: Sneezing, coughing, congestion, wheezing, dyspnoea, asthma

Ears: Aural fullness, pain, impaired hearing.

Skin: Rashes, eczema, Hives, patches, itching

GIT: Abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea

Anaphylaxis may involve multiple system comprising digestive system, respiratory system, nervous system and circulatory system.

Latex can trigger an IgE-mediated cutaneous, respiratory, and systemic reaction. The most prevalent response to latex is an allergic contact dermatitis, a delayed hypersensitive reaction appearing as dry, crusted lesions.

Ayurveda treatment for Allergy

Ayurveda views allergic reaction to be degradation in Bala or Ojas of one’s body. Hence first line of treatment is to avoid the contact with triggering factor as such in the case of food, dust, latex etc. this would prevent progression of severity further.
