Gastrooesophageal Reflux Disease which is also known as Acid Reflux, is a chronic disease condition in which stomach contents may regurgitate into oesophagus and causes acid taste in the back of mouth along with heart burn.


GERD is due to poor closure of oesophageal sphincter which usually prevents the food rising up while peristaltic movement in the stomach. It is also considered as lifestyle disorder as Obesity, Smoking, Taking certain medicines such as antihistamines, calcium channel blockers, sleeping pills which are taken commonly for a long term. It is also common in pregnancy. High blood calcium level which increases gastrin resulting in acidity.


Signs & Symptoms

In adults, the most common symptoms seen are acidic taste in the mouth along with heart burn, regurgitation, pain while swallowing or sore throat, increased salivation, nausea, chest pain.

In children, GERD is usually difficult to detect since they cannot describe the feeling. Repeated vomiting, effortless spitting, coughing, other respiratory problems, inconsolable crying, refusing food, crying for food and then rejecting it, weightloss, badbreath and burping are common symptoms.


Reflux Oesophagitis ( Inflammation of oesophageal epithelium and ulceration of sphincters), Oesophageal strincters ( Persistent narrowing due to inflammation of epithelium), Barrett’s Oesophagus (instestinal metaplasia) and Oesophageal CA are other chronic symptoms.


Ayurvedic Acidity Treatment

Ayurveda plays a major role in the management of GERD as this disease can be. Basically GERD causes digestive complaint which is a causative factor for many major diseases as per Ayurveda. Ayurveda management for GERD comprises Internal medicines which will correct the impaired digestion processes and reduces the inflammation and ulceration of oesophagus.

Diet regime should be purely vegetarian with restricted recipe. Sour taste vegetables and fruits must be avoided. Non-vegetarian recipe as it includes spices and heavy to digest, it must be avoided. Intake of food and water must be in a strict and adequate quantity and timing.

Panchakarma has role in pacifying pitta vitiated and enhance enzymatic action properly. Yoga therapy improves both Vata, Pitta and Kapha which should be synchronized for normal health of oesophageal epithelium and sphincters.
