Obesity is one of the most common disease conditions which can be caused by other diseases or it become a factor for the prognosis of other systemic diseases. It is regarded as serious public health problem. In Obesity, the person has excess body fat accumulation all over body which led to a negative effect on their health.

Cause

Obesity arises most commonly due to a combination of excessive food intake and lack of physical activity. In a few people, genetic susceptibility is major factor. Endocrine disorders, medications and mental disorders also play a major role in this condition.

Obesity is considered as Lifestyle disorder which may develop due to insufficient sleep, sedentary work life, environmental pollution, increased use of electronic gadgets and inclusion of junk food instead of normal diet regime.

 

Classification

Grade of Obesity is monitored using BMI (Body Index Mass), a measurement obtained by dividing a person’s weight by the square of the person’s height. A normal person will have BMI of around 18.5-25. A person with BMI above 25 is considered as overweight. Obesity is classified as BMI above 35.

Class(I) Obesity ranges from BMI 30-35.

Class(II) Obesity ranges from BMI 35-40

Class(III) Obesity ranges from BMI above 40 which is highly risk too.

Waist – Hip Ratio and Waist – height ratio are other significant quotients along with the body index mass.

Body Metabolic Rate (BMR) is also considered while routine check-ups.

 

Pathophysiology

The actual process of the condition is not known. Yet a very range of disease condition has obesity as one of the symptoms. Age is major factor which decide the risk of obese condition. Teenagers with a BMI above 30 have a higher risk than an adult. In Ayurveda explains obesity as a vitiation of body constituent and digestive fire which led to Medodushti where excess fat deposition is experienced.

 

Relation with other Systemic diseases

Obesity condition is a prognosis and complicity factor in various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, Type(II) diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis, depression and even in cancer condition. Obesity increases the risk of many physical and mental conditions. These co-morbidities are most commonly shown in metabolic syndrome,[2] a combination of medical disorders which includes: diabetes mellitus type 2high blood pressurehigh blood cholesterol, and high triglyceride levels and also reduces their life expectancy.

 

Ayurvedic Obesity Treatment
