Psoriasis is chronic, inflammatory auto-immune skin disorder that may affect not only skin but even scalp and nails. Psoriasis causes Keratinocytes multiply 10 times rapidly than usual and these immature cells get pile up over the surface of skin that forms scaly, flaky or red patches. Psoriatic patches are mostly seen on knees, elbow, lower back and scalp. Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disease but the symptoms may go remission for a few months and then flare up again repeating throughout one’s life. Psoriasis may affect small children to adults with variant from a few spots to major eruptions that cover large areas.

Causes

The main cause of Psoriasis is unknown. It is seen that Genetic factors or defective Immune system can cause Psoriasis. The skin is considered as the first level of the immune system.

According to Ayurveda, consumption of unwholesome food or incompatible food combinations,trauma on skin like cuts, bruises or burns, allergic reaction to certain medicine intake or skin irritants, excessive smoking or alcoholic consumption, excessive mental stress may also cause psoriasis.

Pathophysiology

Psoriasis in Ayurveda perspective is caused due to the imbalance of two body humours Vata and Kapha that lead accumulation of toxins beneath the skin affecting deeper tissues such as  blood, lymph etc. This interferes the normal cell cycle of skin and produces Psoriasis.

Signs & Symptoms

§  Red patches of skin covered with silvery scaly line

§  Silvery flakes that sheds profusely

§  Raised pus filled skin bumps.dry, itchy, cracked skin that may bleed..

§  Skin pain and inflammation.

§  Burning or soreness over skin surface.

§  Nails may become discoloured, thickened, pitted or ridged.

§  Swollen and stiff joints.

§  Emotional distress.

Types and Complications of Psoriasis

Most common Psoriasis is Plaque Psoriasis. Nail Psoriasis, Guttate Psoriasis, Inverse Psoriasis, Pustular Psoriasis, Erythrodermic Psoriasis are other types.

Complications such as Psoriatic Arthritis, Obesity, Type (II) Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, Kidney diseases and Psychological complications may occur.

Ayurveda Psoriatic Treatment

The main aim of Ayurveda Treatment is to purify the blood and deeper tissues from accumulated toxins and balances the vitiated Vata and Kapha .

Depending upon the range of vitiation of body humours and other tissues and the severity of symptoms Psoriatic Ayurveda Treatment is to be decided by an Ayurveda physician.

Diet and Regime

§  Ayurveda advice to maintain a vegetarian diet.

§  To avoid triggering factors such as incompatible foods (combination of milk and fish, meat and yogurt etc)

§  Avoid taking foods that cause indigestion.

§  Avoid foods that are too much salty, sour or acidic in nature.

§  Do not take a cold water bath immediately after heavy workhold, long walk or travelling.

§  The person may include Turmeric, Bittergourd, Aloe vera etc.

§  Practicing Suryanamaskara, Pranayama etc benefits to reduce the stress and boost the immune system.
