Sourcing the ingredients and preparing your own porridge is the best way towards better health. Here goes a simple recipe for you.



KARKITAKA KANJI-MONSOON SPECIAL HERBAL MEDICINAL PORRIDGE


Ingredients

To serve a family of two adults and two kids:

1. Raw Rice or Navara Rice: 250gms

2. Water: 2l

3. Thazhuthama leaves (Boerhavia diffusa): 50g

4. Cheroola root (Aerva lunata): 50g

5. Kurunthotti (Sida cordifolia): 50g

6. Chulliveru (Asteracantha longifolia): 50g

7. Poovamkurunnal (Vernonia cineria): 50g

8. Thottavadi (Mimosa podica):50g

9. Keezharnelli (Phyllanthes niruri): 50g

10. Parpatakapullu (Oldenlandia corymbosa): 50g

11. Muri Marunnu root (Hemigraphis colorata): 50g

12. Turmeric: 1/2 teaspoonful

13. Coriander: 1/2 teaspoonful

14. Coconut Milk: 100ml

15. Cumin: ½ teaspoonful


Preparation

Clean, sort, wash, dry, and powder the roots during summer. Store the powders in airtight containers or packets. Collect, sort, and clean the leaves on the day of preparation. Pure leaves and mix the root powders into them. Roast and powder cumin and coriander seeds. Boil water in an open vessel. Wash the rice and add it to the boiling water.


Add the cumin and coriander powders. Cook till the rice turns soft. Mix the herbal mixture into the rice and cook well. Add salt to taste. Remove from fire, mix well and add coconut milk One portion of this porridge for breakfast or dinner for 10 days during monsoon in the tropics and during the winter season, the temperate zones will help to boost immunity and preserve family health. The herbs can be shade dried and stored airtight for winter use. The dried powders are also available commercially.
